Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines for Today, Saturday 19th February 2022

Hello Nigeria, welcome to Naija News’ roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today Saturday 19th February 2022.

Although Nigerians have long developed a thick skin over the shenanigans of public officials, the unfolding of sordid cases surrounding disgraced policeman DCP Abba Kyari has taken the absurdities to a new level. Even the civilized world did not expect such monumental corruption in the conduct of security affairs. This criminality in the country’s law enforcement agencies makes the outrageous reinstatement of pension fund thief, Abdulrasheed Maina, a breeze. Just when Nigerians thought they had seen it all, they never suspected that a supposed super cop was a super crook through and through in dealing hard drugs and well versed in his dealership.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) primary committee met with the top three contenders for the party ticket ahead of Osun’s gubernatorial election.

The committee chaired by Kwara Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazak met with Governor Gboyega Oyetola, Moshood Adeoti and Lasun Yusuf at the party secretariat in Osogbo, the state capital, on Friday.

It was found that Adeoti arrived at the meeting around 6:15 p.m., while former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Lasun Yusuf arrived around 6:19 p.m.

The main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is still far from settling disputes over the zoning of its presidential ticket ahead of the 2023 elections.

It was gathered that in a bid to find a solution to the zoning brouhaha, the PDP governors had embarked on an unsuccessful trip to neighboring Ghana.

The retreat in Ghana that was initiated to end the zoning disagreement did not yield the desired results as the warring parties refused to sheath their swords.

President Muhammadu Buhari will forever be remembered by Nigerians for building important projects vital to the economic development of the country, the presidency said.

Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina said his mandate will not be forgotten for the construction of some projects such as the second Niger bridge which will be completed this year.

He made the submission in an article titled “NDABOSKI! If only for the 2nd Niger Bridge, this country will never forget Buhari’ posted on his Facebook page on Friday.

The National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reportedly increased security at its headquarters in The Gambia, Area 11, Garki, Abuja.

The agency was found to have tightened security over fears of attempts to release suspended intelligence response team commander DCP Abba Kyari and some of his men in custody.

Naija News reports that Abba Kyari has been detained by the anti-narcotics agency since Monday for allegedly trafficking cocaine.

A senior commander of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP), Mallam Buba Danfulani, was shot dead by Nigerian army troops.

Naija News reports that Danfulani and some ISWAP fighters were killed by an airstrike carried out by the Nigerian army along the shores of Lake Chad in Borno State on Sunday, February 13.

The ISWAP leader was reportedly in a meeting with his lieutenants when the airstrike was carried out east of Madayi in the Kukawa local government area of the state.

Nigerians have condemned the Federal Government for raising the electricity tariff by the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in the country.

Naija News has learned that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has adjusted electricity tariffs paid to DisCos, which invariably means tariffs have been increased.

It was found that some of the distribution companies saw their tariffs increase, while others saw theirs fall. Verifications by this platform show that the silent increase was not announced or published on the NERC website.

The ordeal of former IGP Intelligence Response Team leader Abba Kyari doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon as the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has filed a court petition asking for an extension of his detention.

The suspended deputy police commissioner is being questioned by the NDLEA alongside four other police officers involved in an alleged drug deal.

Kyari, who in the past had been described by Nigerians as a super cop, has had his name dragged through the mud due to different allegations leveled against him over the past few weeks.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) faction loyal to former Kano Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has pledged to challenge the Court of Appeal’s decision.

Naija News reports that the Court of Appeal ruled on Thursday against the emergence of the APC faction in the state which has Ahmadu Haruna Zago as its president.

The court then upheld the appeal of the party faction led by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and quashed the judgment of the FCT High Court for lack of jurisdiction.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has slammed media mogul, Raymond Dokpesi for allegedly spreading fake news about elected governors on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

Wike, in a statement Thursday from his special assistant, media, Kelvin Ebiri, denied a text message allegedly sent by Dokpesi claiming that PDP governors had traveled to Europe to choose candidates for the presidency and vice-presidency of the party for the 2023 elections.

Wike urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whom Dokpesi backs for the 2023 presidency, to convince the media mogul to stop spreading rumors that will polarize governors and PDP stakeholders.
